Speech Language Services at Summer Rays

A large number of students attending our Summer Rays program had difficulties with speech and language, attention or processing. That is why Katie Plaunt, Speech Language Pathologist at the Durham Catholic District School Board is an important part of our Summer Rays team.

Throughout July, Plaunt travelled to our Summer Rays’ sites to help students build their language and literacy skills, while playing fun games and reading books. “Talking and listening skills are the basis for learning literacy and math,” said Katie Plaunt. “Without strong oral language skills, children may have difficulty with literacy and math learning.”

Each site used a Phonological Awareness Kit filled with activities that helped students learn to hear and produce rhymes, manipulate syllables and identify and play with various sounds and letters in words.

Plaunt also attended the Summer Rays’ Open Houses and provided parents with information to help students continue their learning at home. If you are concerns with their child’s oral language skills or early literacy learning, please speak to your school’s Program Support Teacher in order to connect with the school-based Speech-Language Pathologist.
